KaBoon: themed employee recognition that turns kudos into a game

A themed employee recognition platform for teams that want people to actually use kudos.

Problem it solvesRecognition software feels boring and corporate, so people stop using it.

Flame1994 built KaBoon after a custom Harry Potter themed recognition system got high participation at a 150-person tech company. The maker reports 90% of the company was actively giving or receiving recognition.

I built a harry potter recognition system and 90% of the company used it (now I launched my own product) Okay so this isn't the typical "solo founder grinds for 3 months" story, but hear me out. I was an engineering manager at a 150-person tech company and we had the classic problem: recognition software didn't work. people used it for a bit, then it sits there collecting dust. We tried multiple services, but nothing felt quite right. So me and someone from the people team came up with a cool idea. We decided to build a custom recognition system and themed the entire thing around harry potter. We divided the company into four houses (each named after a founder). Every time someone gave recognition, it counted toward their house's points. The results were quite impressive. Within months, 90% of the company was actively giving or receiving recognition. People were talking about it in slack and in person and were genuinely invested in the "house cup". I realized that the problem isn't recognition, it's that recognition software is boring and corporate. Nobody wants to fill out a form or do some manual entry on a website. Nobody cares about "kudos" or whatever jargon corporate recognition software sells. Our recognition platform felt like ours because it was our culture, our inside jokes, our competition. That's when we decided to build it as a product: **KaBoon**. Fun themes, customizable values, customizable teams, seasonal resets, team competition and more. A Chrome extension that tracks small productivity progress

Small progress on my Chrome extension: 38 installs 4 weekly users Weekly users are up 103% from the previous period. Still a tiny number, but seeing people come back and use something I built is encouraging. Keeping at it and learning how distribution works.

A Chrome extension that tracks installs and weekly users

39 installs for my Chrome extension. Still small, but seeing weekly users grow is encouraging. Building the product is only half the job. Getting people to discover it — and keep using it — is the harder part. One small step at a time.

A Chrome extension that is getting its first installs

40 installs for my Chrome extension 🎉 The numbers are still small, but I'm starting to see a little more movement: • 40 installs (+25.93%) • 12 page views (+68.42%) • 4 weekly users (+64.71%) Still learning that building the product is only half the job.

An app that scales with organic content posting

Day 27 of scaling my app to $10k/month. 16 active subs. $551.40 revenue in the last 28 days. No big spike today. That's organic: someone may see a slideshow now and search for the app later or never. I can't predict the next sale. I can keep making useful content and posting.
